USA Southwest 2015

DSC_4035 This past April, Silke and I took a three week tour of the US southwest. Our journey encompassed 6 different states and 7 national parks, several Navajo monuments and many state parks. Although there were so many sights on our route, we averaged about 100 miles a day, so we had plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and do some great hikes along the way.

We started by flying to Phoenix, from where we started our road trip. Next stop was beautiful Sedona, AZ, where we spent two days hiking and getting acclimatized. From there we drove to Tusayan on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. We continued north to Page, where we visited Horseshoe Bend, Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon. Our last stop in Arizona was in Kayenta, where we overnighted before heading to amazing Monument valley. A short jaunt through southeast Utah took us past Mexican Hat and on to 4-corners, before arriving in Mesa Verde, CO. We spent a day in Mesa Verde and an uneventful night in Durango, before heading back towards Utah. We stayed in Moab for three days, hiking in Arches N.P. and Canyonlands, and also taking a jetboat tour of the Colorado river. After Moab, we headed further west and south for four days, hitting Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion N.P. along the way. Finally we arrived in Las Vegas, which was a great contrast to all the nature and rocks we had been seeing. After two days of Vegas (what happens there stays there……), we made the longest stint of our journey by driving to L.A., where we spent one night at Hermosa Beach before flying back home.

Jambo Kenya !

dsc_1311Since Silke was a little girl watching Daktari, she has always dreamed of going to Kenya. For me as a hobby photographer, it has also been a wish to go to Africa and experience a safari. So we flew to Mombasa, where we had the first culture shock while driving through the city on the way to the hotel. A very eye-opening experience to say the least and definitely a long-lasting impression. We stayed at an absolutely beautiful hotel called the Sarova Whitesands, and enjoyed the first week of our stay relaxing, dining and enjoying the great weather and local hospitality. During the second week, we spent three days on safari in Tsavo East N.P. and at the Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge in the Taita hills region. It was a great experience and we saw some amazing landscapes and plenty of exotic animals, including six lions and several herds of elephants. The elusive cheetah and the endangered black rhino were not sighted, but we decided it would not be the last time we visited Africa 😉  Upon returning to Mombasa, we spent a few more days relaxing on the beach before returning home to cold and rainy Germany.

Sardinia 2013

photo shoot on the windy beachSilke and I took a „hop“ over to Sardinia this May for a week of relaxing and sightseeing. The weather was a bit cool for the this time of year, but we had little rain and saw some truly amazing coastlines. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean sea and offers a number of sightseeing opportunities along it’s 90 mile northern coastline. The month of May is the best time to see the whole pallet of wild flowers and blooming coastal scrub. The beaches are somewhat small, but being almost empty, offer wonderful opportunities for long walks in the sand..
